Marchant Statement on Passage of the “Halt Tax Increases on the Middle Class and Seniors Act”

WASHINGTON – September 13, 2016: U.S. Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) issued the following statement following the passage of H.R. 3590, the “Halt Increases on Middle Class and Seniors Act.”

“Today I voted to protect millions of middle class families and seniors from a higher tax bill,” said Marchant. “The Halting Increases on Middle Class and Seniors Act repeals a debilitating Obamacare tax increase on medical expenses that will cripple middle class families and seniors alike.”

“Currently, seniors can deduct out of pocket medical expenses that exceed 7.5 percent of their adjusted growth income on their taxes. The ACA increases this threshold to 10% on January 1, 2017 for Americans over the age of 65. Now is not the time to tax our vulnerable seniors, especially on their health expenses.”

“This tax hike has already gone into effect on Americans younger than 65. The effect on the middle class has been detrimental and the IRS has concluded that 87% of households that claimed this reduced deduction earned less than $100,000. My constituents have known since day one that America couldn’t afford president’s health care law. And saddling vulnerable Americans with an increased tax bill to pay for this failed policy is unacceptable.”
