Marchant Praises Supreme Court Decision Blocking Administration’s Amnesty Plan

WASHINGTON – June 23, 2016: U.S. Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Texas. The Court in a 4-4 tie upheld the lower court’s ruling that the president’s executive action to grant illegal immigrants amnesty is against the law. The decision means the program will remain blocked from going into effect, and the issue will return to the lower court.

“This Texas-led challenge to the president’s executive orders on immigration – a challenge that I strongly supported, has levied the crushing blow to the president’s illegal amnesty,” said Marchant. “Article I of the Constitution is clear – ‘All legislative powers shall be vested in Congress.’ The attempted erosion of this principle was a threat to the rule of law and that is why this challenge by Texas and other states was so important. This fight was not just about amnesty, but about asserting the will of Americans and defending the authority of Congress. The Constitution remains clear: The president does not write the laws of this country. This is another victory in the fight to restore the separation of powers laid out by the Constitution.”
