U.S. Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision regarding same-sex marriage:
“With the Constitution silent on the issue of marriage, this sacred institution should be defined by the states and the American people, as it always has been – not by activist judges. The Supreme Court has chosen to completely disregard the democratically-enacted will of millions of Americans in a majority of states, including the people of Texas. I believe that marriage is a sacred union between a man and woman. Even those who hold differing views on that point, however, should be concerned about the precedent set by the Court’s decision. Five judges have squashed democratic debate, remade constitutional law without guiding principles, and imposed their own will on the entire country. As this ruling is carried out, it is vital to ensure that there is no further erosion of Americans’ freedom to live and work in accordance with their faith.”
Marchant is an original cosponsor of the First Amendment Defense Act, legislation that would prevent any federal agency from discriminating against a person, organization, or business based on their religious beliefs regarding marriage.
