Congressional Art Competition

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of high school students in their districts. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with this nationwide competition.  The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in the 24th Congressional District.

The winner of the contest is recognized both in the district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC where the winning piece will be displayed in the Capitol for an entire year.                        

The Congressional Art Competition is open to all high school students in the 24th Congressional District. Art work entered in the contest may be up to 28 inches by 28 inches (including the frame) and may be up to 4 inches in depth.

  • Paintings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
  • Drawings - including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoalink, and markers
  • Collage
  • Prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
  • Mixed Media
  • Computer Generated Art
  • Photography

Please view the Competition Guidelines to understand the contest requirements. Participants must submit the Application Form and digital image of the art work through the link below by 5 p.m. Friday, March 29.

The application is completed and submitted online.  The process only takes a few minutes.

 Congressional Art Contest Selection Process and Awards Ceremony
After applying to the contest, a jury board will select a collection of artwork for the preliminary round of judging. The selected artwork will be featured at the Southlake Art in the Square Festival from April 26 – 28, 2013. The festival will be at the Southlake Town Square, and the artwork will be prominently displayed near the Gazebo.

Any accepted artwork must be brought to the Gazebo at Southlake Town Square on Thursday, April 25, 2013 from 4pm-9pm.
A list of finalists will be published on this webpage on April 15, 2013.  Framed artwork must not have glass due to moisture that can ruin the piece. 

All finalists will receive an award and the Congressional Art Contest winner will be announced at ceremony on Sunday.

The awards presentation is on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gazebo stage in Southlake Town Square.

All artist with submitted pieces need to be present to claim their artwork following the presentation.
           
Savannah College of Art and Design Scholarship
Savannah College of Art and Design has enrolled a large number of Congressional Art participants and award recipients. As a result of the college’s relationship with the art contestants, SCAD offers a scholarship to the 1st place winner of the Congressional Art Contest.
