Congressman Marchant’sStatement Recognizing Texas Teachers

Congressman Marchant submitted the following statement to the Congressional Record in recognition of the annual National Teacher Appreciation Week:

“Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize our Nation's teachers, and particularly those of Texas' 24th Congressional District. Yesterday marked the beginning of National Teacher Appreciation Week, and today, May 8, 2012, is Teacher Appreciation Day. This annual week celebrates the encouragement, support and discipline selflessly provided by America's educators. Teaching is a difficult job that requires significant talent. Most, if not all, of America's educators devote their careers to enriching the lives of our children. Almost everyone holds dear the memory of at least one teacher in particular who made a significant impact on their life. We can never fully thank our teachers for their hard work and dedication.

“We rely on teachers to shape the minds of America's next generation. Nearly 5 million students in Texas depend on our State's educators to provide them with the vital knowledge needed to succeed in life. This is a massive job that comes with an even greater responsibility. Teachers accept this responsibility with great pride. I am extremely honored to recognize the amazing work of our teachers. I cannot thank them enough for their commitment to the children in Texas and across the country.

“Mr. Speaker, on behalf of the 24th Congressional District of Texas, I ask all my distinguished colleagues to join me in recognizing the selfless work of America's educators. We must always recognize those who dedicate their careers to enriching the lives of our children.”

Congressman Marchant Receives American Conservative Union Award

Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) received today the American Conservative Union’s ACU Conservative Award for legislative votes cast during 2011.

“It is an honor to accept the American Conservative Union Award today from the nation’s largest watchdog organization for conservative values,” said Marchant. “This is an encouraging recognition of my commitment to see America return to its founding principles of limited government and individual freedom.”

The award is scored based on 25 votes, including votes cast to cut wasteful government spending, expand domestic energy production, repeal excessive federal regulations, and more. Members of Congress must receive a score of 80 percent or more in the organization’s annual rating guide to qualify for the designation. Marchant scored a 91 for his voting record in the first session of the 112th Congress.

Congressman Marchant Presents Overdue Military Medals to Two Recipients

U.S. Congressman Kenny Marchant presented overdue military decorations to two veterans, Jim Wallace and Bernard Jezercak both of Carrollton.

Sgt. Jim Wallace of Carrollton served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II from 1943 to 1946. Wallace was recognized with the following decorations: Presidential Unit Citation with Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Sharpshooter Badge with Carbine Bar, and the WWII Honorable Service Lapel Button.

Bernard Jezercak of Carrollton served in the U.S. Army as a technical sergeant during World War II. Jezercak was a soldier of the Merrill’s Marauders, a special operations unit that went deep into enemy territory. Because of their exceptional heroism, each soldier was recognized with a Bronze Star. My military liaison, John Hayes, conducted superior work to confirm Jezercak’s service and procure this distinguished award. Jezerack was also recognized with the Silver Star, Presidential Unit Citation, American Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, and the WWII Honorable Service Lapel Button.

When many veterans leave the service for civilian life, they are unaware they are due military medals. Congressman Marchant believes all veterans deserve recognition no matter the length of time that has passed since service. If you are a veteran or a family member of a veteran in the 24th Congressional District who has earned awards for your military service but have not yet received recognition, please contact John Hayes in Congressman Marchant’s district office (972) 556-0162.

Congressman Marchant Earns “Guardian of Seniors’ Rights Award” from 60 Plus

The 60 Plus Association recognized Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) today for earning the “Guardian of Seniors’ Rights Award” for his strong commitment to seniors during the first half of the 112th Congress.

“It is an honor to once again be recognized by the 60 Plus Association for my commitment to protecting and improving the livelihood of Texas seniors,” said Marchant. “60 Plus has been tireless advocates for our nation’s seniors, fighting to eliminate wasteful government spending while preserving programs seniors depend on.”

60 Plus Chairman Jim Martin said, “Representative Marchant can be counted on to preserve Social Security and Medicare. Seniors have to live within their means and so should our government.”

The 60 Plus Association’s Guardian Award is presented to Democrats and Republicans in Congress based on their “senior friendly” voting records.
Marchant Applauds Introduction of The Small Business Tax Cut Act

Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) today applauded the introduction of the Small Business Tax Cut Act authored by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor. The legislation gives small businesses with less than 500 employees a 20% tax cut.

“The Small Business Tax Cut Act is much-needed and timely legislation that will help small businesses grow and create jobs. At a time when the private sector is struggling to regain its footing in the economy, this bill will help small businesses hire new workers and make investments that will lead to sustained economic growth and prosperity. This legislation, along with the recently-passed JOBS Act, will continue the House’s effort to remove barriers to private sector job creation which includes lowering taxes and easing the regulatory burden. I look forward to working with Majority Leader Cantor and my Ways and Means Committee colleagues to pass this vital legislation and hope that both chambers will move promptly to send this bill to the President’s desk.”
Congressman Marchant, Texas Congressmen urge President to put women’s health above politics

More than a dozen Texas Congressmen sent a letter to the President expressing disappointment with his administration’s decision to deny the state’s request to renew the Texas Women’s Health Program waiver. Without action federal funding for the program will run out on March 31st putting at risk the health and well being of low income women who depend on the program for family planning services, which may include basic screenings for breast and cervical cancer, diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, high blood pressure, and other health issues.

The letter was signed by Reps. Joe Barton, Kevin Brady, Michael Burgess, Quico Canseco, Mike Conaway, Blake Farenthold, Bill Flores, Ralph Hall, Sam Johnson, Kenny Marchant, Pete Olson and Lamar Smith.

“We are concerned that your decision to deny this waiver is not being driven by concern for the health of Texas women, but by your insistence at supporting a pro-abortion agenda, something the Texas Legislature has statutorily forbidden the State of Texas from following,” wrote the Congressmen to the President. “We want the Federal Government to be supportive of this creative and effective initiative, rather than try to force the State of Texas to violate state law to receive Federal Medicaid dollars.”

The letter went on to say, “Because the Social Security Act does not define qualifications for Medicaid providers, Texas has the right under the 10th Amendment to determine such standards as the state sees fit. Texas has made a decision as to how to spend its money, and the Federal Government should not intrude on that decision just to support Planned Parenthood or any other abortion provider.”

“While are pleased that Texas is embarking on the development of a state-based Women’s Health Program, we ask that you reconsider your Administration’s decision to deny this 1115(a) waiver renewal request, and restore these important health care services for Texas women.”

A copy of the letter is available here: http://marchant.house.gov/UploadedFiles/Texas_Womens_Health_Program_Letter.pdf

Marchant Applauds Passage Of JOBS Act in House

Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) released the following statement on the passage of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act (H.R. 3606) by a vote of 390 to 23 in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Today I voted in favor of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act. This bill would remove barriers that are preventing our small businesses and entrepreneurs from accessing vital capital,” said Marchant. “The House has once again passed a common sense plan to encourage job creation and economic growth in the U.S. Having been a small business owner myself, I know how difficult it can be to navigate red tape, and I believe the JOBS Act will help liberate our job creators to innovate and grow.”

The JOBS Act is comprised of six bills, many of which have passed the U.S. House of Representatives with strong bipartisan support but have remained stalled in the U.S. Senate. The JOBS Act aligns with some recommendations from the President’s own Jobs Council and has the support of many small businesses.
